29 Aug 2008 Top Killers of Pinoys

I always watch the show “Ang Pinaka” at Q11 which I finds very informative as well as entertaining. Last Sunday’s show featured Ang Pinaka-Dreaded Killer ng Pinoy (The Top Dreaded Killer of Filipinos). I of course watched it earnestly to know which are the causes of death of Filipinos.

29 Aug 2008 Metro Manila and Pink Fences
 |  Category: lifestyle  | Tags: ,  | Leave a Comment

I don’t usually go out of my comfort zone: my place in this wold, Marikina. Yesterday, I went to Manila and noticed a lot of changes in the streets which includes the very noticeable pink fences, pink lines, pink overpass (now called footbridges) and more pink thingies.

I know instantly, this fence installation and pink stuff in the street are related to MMDA and its hero, Bayani Fernando. No matter how girly it looks, these pink things actually symbolizes discipline which is now very visible in the whole of Metro Manila because of the pink man.

It’s actually ironic how BF puts a color that is considered girly in imposing discipline and order. I think its putting heart and mind together which creates a harmony that is now known to Metro Manilans.

That’s a good irony after all. I hope these programs would eventually lead to safer streets in Metro. I hate snatchers and criminals loitering the streets. Don’t we all?

29 Aug 2008 The Power of the Word “Free” in a Business
 |  Category: business and finance  | Tags:  | Leave a Comment

Here is a powerful tool in selling: use the word “free.” People love freebies, no matter how cheap or unimportant. Just as long as something comes with a purchase, it will definitely turn heads of shoppers.

I am a confessed addict of freebies. Of course, I am a voracious and a self-confessed shopping addict. Not only once I over spend or buy stuff I don’t need just to get the promotional items or free items that goes with the product I bought.

Here are some ways on how to maximize the use of word “FREE” in promoting your products or services:

  • Free “Something” After Buying “Something.” An item or service becomes free after the first purchase.
  • Get the Third Free After Buying Two. To sell more, give away one product or service after purchase of two others!
  • Get the Fourth Free After Buying Three. Principle is same as above except you’re giving away the fourth one after purchasing three items or services. I usually encounter this at video stores with their promos rent 3+1 or 4+1.
  • Free “Trial Size” After Purchase. Very effective when selling perfumes or other liquid products. Also a good strategy when introducing a new product line.
  • Free “Additional Item” Related to the Products or Service Purchased. Examples: Free Warts Removal for Diamond Pill Package. Free Ring for Purchase of Necklace.

27 Aug 2008 A Hard Drive Dilemma

My Pentium 4 personal computer set is more than years old. When I bought it, it was sort of top of the line then with a good memory capacity. Today, you can say it is already old and slow and needing an upgrade.

The hard drive of my PC mostly contains photos and my designs which occupy a lot of space. I was thinking of buying a portable hard disk with USB slots which are the rave these days since these are very ease to use (plug and play) and comes fully loaded with memory capacity. The price though starts at P2,500 and up.

Another techie friend of mine advised that instead of buying these types of portable hard disk, I’d be able to save more money by buying external hard disk for laptops which may be attached using USB connectivity also. He said I would be saving a thousand or more by doing so.

Do you have other tips on buying external hard disks? If so, please leave a comment on this post to help me and other readers choose the right hard disks for PC. Thanks!

24 Aug 2008 The Umobile Hip in the Philippines
 |  Category: digital communication  | Tags:  | Leave a Comment

Have you heard of Umobile? It’s the first ad-funded mobile network in the Philippines. I heard the company was bought by Smart Telecom so its powered by one, if not, the largest telecom network in the country.

The perks of being a Umobile user? I get a Php100 free load every month for six months. The downside, I can’t seem to text mobile users powered by Globe. I can call them though and the number I’m using won’t appear on their cellular phone so it would look like an overseas call.

How did I get this subscription? I was sent an invite link by a friend. You can only register with Umobile if you were send a link. Invite links are exclusive to those who were previously given an invite. Every successful registrant gets to give 10 invites.

Right now, I’m enjoying using Umobile more so because of the free loads. If you want a free link code from me, give me a backlink for one of my relevant posts on technology and then, give me a message. :)

24 Aug 2008 Motivating Children to Read
 |  Category: lifestyle  | Tags:  | One Comment

There was a book fair held in the vicinity of my workplace. When I was still single, I used to visit bargain bookshops regularly for some good reading materials. These days, I still love shopping for books, but mostly now for my son.

It’s funny that when you become a mom, your tendency is to fill your house with children’s book that your child won’t be able to read in years. I bought him encyclopedias and story books in hard bound. Now that my son is five, he already developed liking for reading but not much. I heard that to be able to motivate your child to read, you must show him that you enjoy it too. His reading experiences would be enjoyable too if you would read books together. I am sometimes guilty of this.

If you’re child is just starting to read, buy him books that suits his level. There are books now for kids that are categorized according to age and level of difficulty. My son’s godmother bought him two books from National starring Buzz Light Year and Spongebob which writings are suited for a beginner on reading like him. Reading books is forever a good habit and we should try to encourage our children to love it.

23 Aug 2008 Banking Woes
 |  Category: everything under the sun, lifestyle  | Tags:  | One Comment

Two weeks back, I got a notice that one of my banks is closing down and I need to appear at the banks, sign some papers and withdraw what’s left of my savings. This bank is actually far from where I live and I only opened an account there because my sister-in-law works beside the bank and she’s the one making the transactions for me like depositing money.

I only used this bank in the past because they offer cheap minimum maintaining balance for opening a Checking Account. Since my sister-in-law changed company, my savings account with the bank became dormant. I only left 500.00 in my account which was actually the bank’s minimum for a savings account. When I went to the bank to settle what I need to settle for their closing, I was shocked that only 68.00 was left in my account. Bank charges ate almost all I’ve got.

It was a lesson learned for me. I thought that if you maintained the minimum balance in your account, nothing would happen and your money would remain as is but they said there are charges for having a dormat account which is actually more than 80% of my total money. Imagine that!

Oh well, I guess it’s not safe to bank after all.
