A Mother’s Note on Buying Groceries for Healthy Living

As a mother, shopping for groceries is a regular chore that I enjoy doing. I especially enjoy this when I do this together with my husband and my son. There’s one hitch though when grocery shopping is done with your child, your grocery cart becomes full with items that is not included in your list. Mostly, with junk foods and chocolates that are not healthy.

These days where living a healthy lifestyle is the trend, especially if you have teenagers who bugs you about getting slimmer or pester you about acne cure, a mother should be more concerned on making her grocery list and her trip to the grocery healthy. these tips will help you accomplish these tasks:

1. Choose canned fruits and canned fish like tuna or salmon that are packed in water, not in oil or syrup.

2. Study the labels for words “hydrogenated”
or “partially hydrogenated,” if these words appear on the labels, the higher the amount of
unhealthy trans fatty acids the food will contain.

3. When buying chicken, buy the chicken breast. I know we all love the skin but we have to let it go if we want a healthy meal served for the family.

4. Choose frozen dinners that are t only low in fat but low in sodium and cholesterol as well.

5. Encourage consumption of dairy products. If not, buy calcium fortified orange juice.

6. In buying bread, select whole grain breads, cereals, and rolls.

7. If you’re buying yogurts, do not buy the ones covered with nuts or raisins, as the coating is normally made of sugar and partially hydrogenated oils.

10. For desserts, buy low fat treats like pretzels, ginger snaps, and angel food cake.
