Baptism Tokens

As I was looking around the house the other day, checking on what needs to be re-arranged inside the house, I saw a rack where I have placed baptism souvenirs or tokens that have accumulated over the years.

Looking at these cute and colorful pieces of tokens, I noticed that my collection varied from glass figurines to ceramic ones, candles, bottles with potpourri, small glasses or mugs with the babies picture on it. These tokens were given to us whenever we attend baptism of friends’ babies.

Nowadays, people give out tokens that can be used like bracelets, rosaries, pins or key chains. I wonder why I don’t have cigars in my collection. Giving out cigars as tokens is a popular practice during the late 17th century. Cigars are being handed out by fathers after the baptism of their first born, especially when a male baby is born. For them, this is a gesture of sharing their happiness.
