03 Jun 2009 A New Face for Breath Technology Blog

You’re looking at an old blog with a new face. Oh yes, it still is breathtechnology.com but now with a new face!

I decided to look for a new theme that would represent the personality of this blog — motherly, geeky, creative. I am of course thankful for the pretty Zoxengen theme of Dezzain which I used for a long time also, a theme I had fun modifying and feature-packed. Only, the featured images at the top sidebars of the page really takes time to upload and for a minute, the page would look distorted until it rearranges itself. This is one of the reasons why I decided its time for a change.

After choosing over hundreds of free wordpress themes online, I stumbled upon the works of Brian of http://www.templatelite.com, a really creative and passionate themes designer. It took me some time to really decide which one I would use for this site as he has a lot of beautiful creations to choose from. I would say the guy is truly an artist.

22 Apr 2009 Moving Feeds From Feedburner to Google

Google recently acquired the hot website Feedburner.com which most bloggers use to deliver and manage their feeds to their subscribers via email. This includes me who uses feedburner services for all my three blogs.

For a long time,  Feedburner has been a reliable service provider for my blogs. My feed statistics as well as the “subscribe to email headliners” are customizable. I excitedly  watched my feed stat grow daily and really feel good each time there are new subscribers signing up.

When Google acquired  Feedburner, one of the best news was that we can now use our feeds for google adsense by migrating your feedburner account to your goggle account. This means that you can now manage your feedburner account alongside your google accounts. It was really rewarding right? I agree but probably because Google is still working on this new acquisition that that there are still annoying glitches like feedburner statistics reverting to 1 which happened to my blogs for a few days. I was really unhappy with this that I took off my feedburner widget so that people won’t see that because they would look at a wrong feedburner subscription stat.  I only brought the feedburner widget when the stat came back to the correct number but again experienced the same glitch sometime after.

08 Apr 2009 An Offline Way of Browsing the Web

Do you want to surf the internet even without an internet connection? Seemed impossible right? Not anymore. A website called MyWebDownload.com is designed to allow internet users to download the whole world wide web in their computers and surf the internet via the download when offline. Amazing ‘ayt!

This program was initiated by three Computer Science students of the University of Kingsman in Georgia: Michael Larrock, Steven Finchel and Larry Cusack. Their brilliant project was supported by some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) which funded the cost for the servers and bandwidth consumption.

If proven successful, this website and its downloads will surely hit the online market very very soon. Although the popularity of internet has reached great heights and people now have recognized the importance of internet in almost all aspects of life — relationships, business, education, politics, world news, and much much more — a lot of people are still not drawn or have not experience the power of internet for lack of access.

Just today, when I visited their website, the notice was:

There are 1,203,304 users downloading The Web right now. We were forced to temporarily disable new downloads, therefore, else our servers would not be able to sustain the load. Please come back in a couple of hours.

Interesting right? Makes you go to their website now and download the web but would get frustrated because more than a million are doing that right now and probably experiencing exasperation because of the terrible slow download. Worth a try anyway. So here are some of the excerpts from their website to enlighten you more on this unbelievable but very welcome program:

31 Mar 2009 Will Conficker C Strike Today? Handful Information on the Conficker Virus.

For days now, online news has been dominated  by the Conficker C Worm Virus threat which is supposed and feared to strike today, April 1 as an April Fools Day disaster gift. The news spread like wildfire, especially after it was covered by international broadcasting agencies like CNN, and caused panick to the online community too wary of malicious viruses cracking down systems and breaking down computers.

In the Philippines, I.T. department of some companies were rumored to be shutting down their systems on the dreaded attack schedule where the virus is set to change programming. The virus, also known as Downup, Downadup and Kido has already infected about 3 millionto 12 millioncomputers running Microsoft Corporation’s operating system. An info that sent shiver to my spine since I’m a Microsoft OS fanatic.

The said virus was set to steal money from people by getting personal information like credit and bank account numbers and passwords. As to how the virus would do this, I don’t have any idea since it sounded ridiculous but nevertheless, the guys behind this dreaded virus were undeniably smart.

For months now, the Conficker worm has been causing sleepless night for computer technician and I.T. people who maintain computer system of private and government agencies. There was even a news that the European media reported that French military even grounded some of its fighter planes after the Navy’s network was infected over the winter. (Source: Yahoo News)

30 Mar 2009 Choosing the Best Web Host

Very soon, breathtechnology.com will have some major overhaul. I recently purchased a new hosting for this blog from my old friend’s hosting. During the process of migrating this blog, I would take the opportunity to improve its layout and design and other functionality, just like how I did it with my other blog marikenya.com.

Developing a blog has always been an exciting challenge for me. I love choosing a new wordpress theme and customizing it to suit my style. I’m very glad Neil, my blogger friend who influenced me into blogging, taught me how to use Core FTP for installing plugins, themes and uploading photos and editing files.

For a while, Neil accommodated my self-hosted wordpress blog in his hosting. It took me some time to actually look for a new webhost and transfer my blog. Since I haven’t talked to my blog master Guru, Neil, I just chose a small webhost company recommended by a friend. Neil scolded me for choosing this one because he’s not familiar with it and its services. He then told me he’s going to transfer his blogs (more than 10 of them), to a new webhost which he carefully chose. This hosting company is a big one with a good marketing scheme and known for its services, the Hostgator. This hosting charges more than my new hosting but my friend wanted a stable and more prominent company managing his blogs.

26 Mar 2009 Geek Mom is Now On Twitter

I remember receiving a lot of invitations from friends to join one of the most popular short messaging service site on the web today — Twitter. A lot of bloggers use this service not just to form social networks but also to promote their blog posts to people who “follow” their messages.

Here’s an excerpt from Twitter:

Why do so many people seem to like Twitter? Simplicity has played an important role in Twitter’s success. People are eager to connect with other people and Twitter makes that simple. Twitter asks one question, “What are you doing?” Answers must be under 140 characters in length and can be sent via mobile texting, instant message, or the web.

Twitter’s core technology is a device agnostic message routing system with rudimentary social networking features. By accepting messages from sms, web, mobile web, instant message, or from third party API projects, Twitter makes it easy for folks to stay connected.

With twitter, you can have real-time conversations with thousands of people all over the world, not limiting at all. The difficulty would be following all announcements, messages or questions of all the people in your network. A lot of breaking news and important information are being posted by Twitter users which you don’t usually find in the newspapers or in the television.

23 Mar 2009 A Blogger’s Journey

Since last year, I have learned so much about blogging that I now feel very confident about making my own website.

It was not easy learning the rudiments of blogging since it involves technicalities that made me nauseous a lot of times (up until now actually). There’s the deal about finding and registering your domain name, finding for a good web host, setting up your account, choosing a blog platform, designing the blog, marketing and promoting it, and trying to monetize it.

The processes though, no matter how hard, are actually fun and exciting. It gives you a sense of pride too that you were able to establish a website of your own which I’m feeling now. Whenever I look at this site, no matter how small or unpopular it may seem, it is a proof that a simple mom like me can be really techy and learn how to put up an online  journal by asking some people and clicking the mouse.

I am continuing my journey as a geek-mom-blogger and I am happily announcing that this blog,  breathtechnology.com, would be undergoing improvement in the next days. Just like my other blog — marikenya.com, breathtechnology will be transferred to a new web host and I’m taking this opportunity to upgrade my wordpress version and my wordpress theme and all others critical for this site’s improvement.

19 Mar 2009 SM WiFi Testing Event at QTV Channel 11

Last month, I attended a bloggers’ event at SM Marikina to test the new WiFi connectivity at this mall. SM Marikina is the first SM mall all over the Philippines which made free WiFi available for its customers.

QTV 11 featured the live blogging and WiFi testing event at SM Marikina in one of its program QTube last night. I was surprised when I received three text messages from friends telling me they saw me on TV during the feature on SM WiFi testing. It was cool because that’s the first time I was actually part of a big bloggers’ event since I became a blogger last year.

For those who were not able to watch the segment of QTube, you can watch it here via Azrael’s blog, thanks to his camera phone and his knack for covering events, he was able to record the show for all of us who were not able to watch it.

16 Mar 2009 The Broadband Mania

Two months ago, I decided to stop my subscription with Smart Broadband. I was not very contented with Smart’s services and for two months, I opted using my mobile phone for internet connectivity. The speed of connection was tremendously low, the P20 per hour charge was not compensated.

It was then I decided to get a new broadband plan. After asking friends who are subscribers of different DSL and broadband providers and actually trying a Sun Broadband Visibility Kit courtesy of my friend Migs of migsmobile.net, I’ve narrowed down my choices to PLDT MyDSL, Globe and Sun Broadband.

I first applied with PLDT but after  waiting for some time and not hearing from them, I decided to apply with Globe. While waiting for the status of my application,  Migs made me try his Sun Broadband Visibility Kit and I was happy that the signal was okay in our place. In fact, I was too eager getting my broadband connectivity I went to the mall the day after and inquired about the plan and the next day, I went home with my own visibility kit.

11 Mar 2009 Social Networking Battles

Everyday, I receive at least three (3) invitations from friends, or even strangers, to join social networking sites. This goes to show how popular social networking sites are these days. Friendship over the internet has become rampant and people these days obviously love the idea of  online affinity.

In the Philippines, among the most popular is Friendster but Facebook is catching up fast especially since its being endorsed by popular celebrities like Ruffa Gutierrez. Now, becoming popular are social networking sites that allows you to chat immediately with other members like Twitter and Plurk.

People love interacting with each other now at the cyberspace. Its really fun getting to know people from different places and different parts of the world in the click of the mouse and tweaking of the keyboard. A lot of friendships and relationships are established daily over the web. What’s sad though is that these social networking sites are being used also by scrupulous individuals or groups with ill intention and these frauds and scammers already victimized a lot of people.
