A Mother’s Love

In a couple of months, the greatest and most important woman in my life is going to celebrate her birthday. She is my mother, the person who painstakingly reared and unconditionally love me. The only person in the world who would never judge me and would not leave me no matter what. The woman who knows and can model perfectly how a mother loves her child or children.

This quote by Robert Brault put aptly what I meant by the kind of mother I have:

“If you have a mom, there is nowhere you are likely to go where a prayer has not already been.”

Indeed, I treat my mother as among the miracles God blessed me with. For her birthday, I want nothing but the best for her. A gift that would symbolize the devotion and quality of motherhood that my mother displayed and continuously displaying. A gift like a set of jewelry made of Mother of Pearl Beads.

The Boom of Dating Sites

An alternative in finding love today is through the internet. In the past, you’d think that only the desperate ones try to find love (or lust) online, but not anymore. Statistics says that in 2012, 40million people visited or used an online dating site, and hey, we’re only talking about the first quarter of the year!

Online dating sites are proliferating and making big bucks from people who attempts to find dates or relationships through the internet. Diversity in geographical locations is not anymore an issue in love and “distance relationship does not work” is already a passé thought.

One thought about people looking for dates online: not all users of dating sites are looking for love, some or even money are doing it for the money. Prostitution lurks also in dating sites and it may be done in subtle or vulgar ways.

I believe parents should be wary of their children’s activities online and see if they are visiting dating sites or are even registered in the sites. Policing our children is among our responsibilities as parents.

Names Parents Should Not Give Their Children

Naming their child is one of parents’ primal obligation and apparently, parents should take ”naming task” seriously.

The Pope of Vatican recently pleaded Catholic worshipers to give their children names that are in the Christian calendar instead of naming them after celebrities, fruit or popular electronic gadgets.

Aside from Pope Benedict, other authority figures all over the world have declared their distaste on particular names they consider indecent or simply silly. These are the top names that are banned for use in different countries:

New Zealand: ‘Talula Does The Hula’

The law in New Zealand declares ban of names which cause offense to a “reasonable person” like ‘Talula Does The Hula,’ a 9-year old girl whose name was renamed after the judge decided that the child’s parents showed very poor judgment in choosing the name of their child which made a fool of her and sets her up with a social disability and handicap. Other names the court in New Zealand prohibited for registration are: Fish and Chips (for twins), Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit.

Italy: Venerdi AKA ‘Friday’

In 2008, a couple wanted to name their child Venerdi but the judges won’t let him. They reasoned that the boy would be exposed to ridicule as the name was taken from the novel Robinson Crusoe which character was associated with ‘subservience and insecurity’ plus the fact that Italians are superstitious and consider Friday an unlucky day. Italy also banned other names: Andrea (for a girl’s name because it’s a boy’s name in Italy) and Dalmata which means Dalmatian.

Nope, it’s not a typographical error. This is really the spelling a Swedish couple named their son in 1996. The parents named their child ‘that’ (hard to spell alright!) as a protest againts Sweden’s strict laws in naming children. Other names banned in Sweden are Metallica, IKEA, Veranda and Q. Surprisingly though, Google is allowed for a child’s name.

Norway: Gesher AKA Bridge

Having so many children may result to “inadequacy in naming” all of them properly. A Norwegian mother with 13children was jailed because she failed to pay a fine for naming her child “Gesher” which means Hebrew for “Bridge” which the court decided as an “unapproved name.” Norway also officially banned monikers featuring swearing, sex and illnesses.

Malaysia” Chow Tow AKA Smelly Head

Malaysian authorities published a list of undesirable names in 2006 to help keep with the country’s religious traditions. One of these monikers is Chow Tow (in Cantonese) or “Smelly Head” in English. Other names such as Ah Chwar (or “Snake”), “Khiow Khoo (or “Hunchback”), Sor Chai (or “Insane”) and Woti (or Sexual Intercourse), are also banned.

Motivations on Muscle Building

Yesterday was movie bonding with the family. We chose to watch the movie “Thor” from Marvel Comics which story talks about the God of Thunder from the Norse mythological deity. It was starred by Chris Hemsworth whom I believe will be popularized by the film. Hemworth’s physique is such a standout and giving justice to what a God from the Greek mythology should look like.

The movie has different effects on the three of us. Our son loved the character of Thor and immediately went to the toy shop to look and shop for the “magic hammer.” I drooled over Hemworth’s sculptured body and promised myself to buy a DVD of Thor and watch it all over again. Husband was fixated on Hemworth’s abs and muscles and how he can at least try to transform himself into that kind being a gym addict himself.

Teaching My Son About the Intestinal System

My son was having a hard time understanding the Intestinal System the other night when I get home. I got curious and take a look at what they’re studying at such an early age.

It was quite difficult to explain in simple terms to my child how the food that goes into his mouth travels down to his stomach to be digested by the small intestine and will eventually go down to the colon or the large intestine. He had a lot of questions and I had to do my research to be able to answer them.

I do not have a medical background but as I was researching I found out that the Intestinal System is very important because it supplies blood in every tissue of our body. So, when the intestines are dirty, the blood supply would be dirty and it will affect all the tissues and organs in our body. That is why colon cleanse is very important.

The colon is the last five feet of the digestive tract which absorbs water, electrolytes and some vitamins, as well as preparing and storing fecal waste prior to elimination. It’s always exciting to learn about how our body works, I just hoped I helped my son with his assignment.

Staying Fit

All of us wanted to live long enough to see our kids grow up and have a family of their own. But sometimes, we get too busy that we don’t have time to exercise anymore or we are just too lazy to do it.

I admit that I haven’t exercised for a long time but I am hoping that I would still be able to do it. There are a lot of things people do to sweat. Some go to the gyms, some go for outdoor jog or running or biking. Some people even go to extremes by joining triathlons. This way they could do swimming, cycling and running at the same time.

But I suggest that we do it as a family. We can bring our family out on a picnic. Pack your cars and bring along your bikes that can easily be mounted on thule racks. This would be a bonding activity with your family while staying fit.

Passing of a Great Father

Every Father’s day, my longing for my ‘Tatay’ who passed away some six years ago is at its peak. It is during this time that I fervently hope he is still alive, still with us, and still fathering me and my son.

He is aptly described in this fatherhood quote by Bartrand Hubbard:

I’ve had a hard life, but my hardships are nothing against the hardships that my father went through in order to get me to where I started.

Another Parenting Lesson

The hot weather is not helping a bit in my son’s skin asthma condition. The allergy go off both in very cold and very hot weather. It first manifested during our stay in Baguio City November of last year. It took us a few months to heal the red scaly patches and it took half a year for the white scars and blotches to fade.

My son suffered from itchy skin inflammation which covered his face, neck, arms and chest. When it was going down his legs, we finally brought him to the dermatologist who gave him allergy relief treatment. He also gave us tips on what to do so the asthma won’t attack again when it’s finally healed.

Parenting is tried more when your child experience sickness and pains. It was more a torture for me than him whenever I see him painfully bearing the effects of the asthma physically and even emotionally. Emotionally because the scars left an eczema-like look and for this, his classmates and playmates would tease him ‘ugly.’ I wanted to scold those kids who bully him for his skin but I know it’s not the right thing to do. What I did was to prep my son and made him feel special despite what others were saying about his skin. Thank God, after some months, the scars faded and his confidence came back.

Most of the times, I don’t know how to be a parent but I guess it’s true that it’s a skill that suddenly become handy to mothers like me without attending crash courses on the topic. Parenting is mysterious, a wonderful gift.

Mommy Journal: The First Field Trip

Being an over-protective mom, I have argued with my husband that we should allow our son to join educational field trips only at later part of his elementary education, say on his fifth or sixth grade.

At first, my husband was mum about it, maybe trying to consider my take on the subject. My stand was due to my personal experience where my parents only allowed me to join field trips when I was a high school freshman.

For two years, my son begged us to allow him to join the school field trips but we firmly refused. This school year though, on his first grade, the school decided to make the Manila Ocean Park as the field trip’s destination. My son together with his papa convinced me to allow our baby to join the trip this time. I reluctantly agreed.

I was the worried mom, while my son and my husband were on the trip together (because I can’t go on leave to join the field trip), I continuously checked on them through call and text. Even if my son was busy touring the place, he happily and excitedly reported to me everything that was going on in his trip. It was a happy day for both my son and my husband and I felt bas I wasn’t with them on that special day.

The trip taught me again another lesson about mommyhood, that at times, we have to let go of our fears and worries so our children would be able to experience freedom and happiness. I’m glad I let go.

A Mom’s Sleepless Night

For the first time since I got married and became a mom, I slept the night alone.

My husband’s work schedule is erratic. For months now, he works on a graveyard shift or popularly known to the call center world as GY shift. On regular days, my baby and I are left alone at night so we already established special bonding like playing computer games, telling stories, and praying together before going to bed. We only sleep as a family two nights a week.

Last night was specially difficult for me as my son pleaded that he sleep over at his grandma’s house where the rest of his cousins will stay for the night. I was adamant at my decision not to allow him and I even used emotional blackmail to him saying I will be left alone if he sleep over. In the end, he won. My husband helped in convincing me and since my son really wanted to go, I reluctantly gave in.

I never thought it would be too difficult sleeping alone. I wanted to call my husband and my baby in the middle of the night to tell them how lonely I was but I stopped myself thinking I’d disturb them. Thank goodness there’s Internet and plants vs zombies or PVZ, my current favorite computer game, I survived the night but slept barely. No wonder I look like a zombie in the morning needing the best anti wrinkle eye creams in the market to look alive and my age. I felt my eye bag was bigger than my small eyes.

Imagine, just a night without my son and I already feel like the world is crumbling down. What more if he’s hold enough to get married, I can’t bear that thought. Parents!
