Facebook Requires Timeline for Users

It’s final for Facebook users. Whether you like it or not, the new Facebook “Timeline” should be used for your profile layout.

The popular social networking site has implemented in beta format its “Timeline” profile theme for users way back in December 2011 where it was welcomed and tried out by more than a million users. The timeline theme is visually appealing allowing the user to set his/her own “header” just like in blogs. Not everyone welcome the new theme though prompting numerous negative comments and reactions against the timeline idea.

Facebook encourages users to use the new timeline and “ ”Tell their life stories with a new kind of profile.” The new theme allows users to highlights photos, posts and events that will allow them to give emphasis on what matters. In the next weeks, every user is forced to switch from their old profile to timeline.

Progressive use of internet has made impacts in the different facets of society. Not surprisingly, even politicians now recognize the use of internet in promoting their political agenda.

Just last year, US President Barrack Obama made the already popular social networking site “Twitter” more known by conducting the first live town hall using the site. Twitter users were encouraged to interact live with the president during the live webcast throwing questions on the state of US economy and employment .

More and more politicians and wannabes are now creating their blog sites and social sites to make their presence known virtually. In short, subtly campaigning and politicking online. Some called this online marketing political social media targeting netizens or internet-patronizing citizens.

In the debates against SOPA and PIPA, netizens all over the world are on the lookout on whose politicians will vote for or against the controversial anti-piracy and copyright laws. One thing is for sure, the choice of politicians which side to support will have an impact on their political ambitions and plans as the online community is a huge force to content with these days.

Facebook Users Complains Privacy Issues

Facebook is now into the habit of changing and upgrading it’s features. Users have different opinions and feelings about these developments though, particularly when privacy issue is concern.

One of the recent feature of Facebook is found at the upper right side of your homepage when you log in to your Facebook account. In that corner called “Ticker,” you can view the activities of your friends — what they visited, commented, liked, and whatever is possible doing with this social networking site. This means though that your friends in your list may very well view your activities too.

This feature is by default. If you don’t want others looking at your activities, you may turn the feature off but how many Facebook users actually know and mind how to turn off features and applications that may very well invade their privacy.

It’s alright to be social, it’s now a popular way to connect with friends and share your life with people but make sure you know and you allowed the social networking site how much information it should give away about you.

Facebook Soon to Charge Fees?

Once again, Facebook users are panicky because of the comeback of the rumor circulating around the popular social networking site. What could be scary for loyal and addicted FB users? The potential charging of fees of the social site!

The rumor is nothing new as it first started scaring the hell out of Facebook users way back in 2009. It’s now back with a vengeance flooding the walls of users in a form of chain messages. These are some of the samples of these spam or chain messages (source: snopes.com)

“Facebook just released their price grid for membership $9.99 per month for Gold Member Services, $6.99 per month for Silver Member Services, $3.99 per month for Bronze Member Services. Free if you copy and paste this message before midnight tonight. When you sign on tomorrow morning, you will be prompted for payment infor. It is official it was even on the news. Facebook will start charging due to the new profile changes. If you copy this on your wall your icon will turn blue and Facebook will be free for you. Please pass this message on if not your account will be deleted if you do not pay!”

The truth — Facebook says it’s not true that users will be charged fees. The rumors are hoax and everyone may enjoy Facebooking on a free basis. Stop spreading the false news. Don’t fall prey with the spammers’ intention of causing panic. Be informed and empowered.

Reverting to Old Facebook Chat

Finally annoyed with the new Facebook Chat, I researched on how to revert to the old but “friendlier, more practical, and usable” Facebook chat. For those who are as annoyed as me with the new FB chat features and wanting to remove the new FB chat sidebar, here are the steps (quite simple to follow) to disable your new FB chat using Google Chrome browser and return to the old one:

Go to “Settings” found at the upper-right corner of your Google Chrome browser.
Go to “Tools” then click “Extensions. If you find a “Facebook Char Reversion” or the like script, click “Disable” or “Remove.”
Go to this site and download and install the “FB Chat Sidebar Disabler.”
Refresh your Facebook page and enjoy your “old chat box.”

Reverting to Old Facebook Chat

There are changes that are hard to accept and this goes true for Facebook users. The popular social networking site released its new chat version last month which has been earning negative commentaries from users. Some of the dislikes for the new chat features are:

the need to manually disable the sidebar chat when logging in.
showing only the names of friends you regularly interact with even if they are offline.
names of friends in the chat list that go online and offline are unorganized or unsorted unlike in the old chatbox where you see you are online or offline and the names are arranged alphabetically.
the “go offline” button in chat is not readily accessible.

Facebook as a Personal Announcement Bulletin

One of the many uses of the popular social networking site Facebook (FB) is being a personal announcement bulletin of its registered users. It has become a free marketplace of information for groups, organizations, businesses, and more importantly, for ordinary people.

With Facebook, the unwritten policy is ”no holds barred” when it comes to “posting” or expressing in written sentiments and feelings of users as well as in making announcements on different topics or events. Nothing is restrained: one can shout damnations or exagerrate; express happiness, confusion sadness, madness, or stupidity. The user’s “wall” (profile page) is his/her kingdom, it can be utilized anyway he/she wanted it up until that profile is flagged or reported as spamming or abusive.

One of the things I find positive about Facebook is that it serves as my updated reminder of the good news about distant relatives, friends, and acquaintances. It reminds me of birthdays, anniversaries, promotions and other celebrations. My personal favorite is birth announcements from friends who are grateful for the gift of a new life in their family. Recently, two of my girlfriends gave birth and posted the photos of their new baby girls at FB. At least, through the site, I was able to post my delight over the newborns who would eventually add to the select rosters of my godchildren.

One of the most notable users of Twitter.com is the great and controversial American President himself, Barrack Obama, who recently used the social media networking site for a live “Twitter Town Hall Meeting.”

Famous personalities and celebrities all over the world seem to favor Twitter versus other networking sites with more interactive features, such as Facebook. The simple interface features of the social site favor celebs. One is the “follow feature” which allow anyone with a Twitter account to follow “tweets” of those they like without the need for approval.

For media reporters, following celebrities and famous personalities In Twitter allow them for first-hand “scoops” or sensational news as many of them express their feelings — positive or negative, in their tweets.

Facebook Now Features Skype Video Calling

When a giant social networking site and a popular online voice-calling company join together, what can we consumers expect? More features!

With Facebook and Skype partnering, the product is an additional feature with Facebook chat which is now powered with video-calling. The social network master himself, Mark Zuckerberg, announced this on a press conference.

The new feature is now more exciting as now, you can see and talk to your FB friend. You’ll find the “call” boxed button between the “message” and “poke” buttons on top of your friend’s profile. A plugin is required to be installed to use the new video-calling feature. This makes connecting with friends and family from different parts of the world cheaper and more exciting as almost everyone now has a Facebook account. Hopefully, the video-calling feature will also help Facebookers who are fond of talking to people they only meet online and decide to meet with them after without any idea of how they look like in person.

US Government Warns on Zombie Apocalypse

Probably because of the popularity of movies and online games casting zombies as characters, the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention decided to include “zombie apocalype” warning in their disaster preparedness program.

The warning came as a blog post from the CDC website which immediate popularity was not expected by the center. The site crashed with 60,000 hits and became a trending topic at Twitter.

Truth is, CDC’s zombie notice is just a social media campaign to rally the people about preparing for disasters such as hurricanes (which season starts in June) and tornadoes. The center wishes to convey the message that if you are prepared for the event of a zombie apocalypse, you are also prepared for any kind of disasters.
