One of our family’s favorite weekend show is Matanglawin by trivia man Kim Atienza of ABS-CBN channel 2. It is an entertaining show at the same time very informative and educational. It is a good show for children and it’s good that our son likes it.

Last week, the show’s episode was about doing action films and the challenges action stars face in producing daredevil stunts. I never thought how risky and how life threatening those stunts are. Before watching the show, I thought producing action films are simple and that they simply apply video magic and tricks to make action scenes heart-palpitating.

Kim Atienza showed how action scenes are filmed by doing the action stunts himself. I like the part where he was being chased by the kidnappers of his girl and he had to enter a burning building to escape by jumping off a 15-ft. fall. In order for them to make the scene realistic, his arm must be caught by the fire. Now that is indeed risky because if the fire on his arm gets rowdy, it will really burn him alive!

In order for them to make this scene safe for Kuya Kim, the options are putting on a bandage on his arm with protections from fire. In Hollywood movies, they usually use asbestos to cover arms or body parts of action stars for scenes like this. It is not use in the Philippines since asbestos is hazardous to health and exposure to it may cause mesothelioma and would make them seek mesothelioma treatments.

It was a very exciting episode and I’ve learned so much from it. I felt sad for action heroes who lost lives from making action stunts.
