The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) of the Philippines announced that detainees can register as voters in the upcoming Barangay and SK elections. The election is scheduled to be held on October 25, 2010 which is a little more than two (2) months from now.

The COMELEC said that this is part of their mandate to ensure the electoral participation of all sectors including the vulnerable sector where the detainees belong. In line with COMELEC Resolution No. 9012 promulgated by the COMELEC en banc on August 4, 2010, satellite registration shall be conducted even in detention cells where there are only ten (10) qualified registrants.

Detainees who were able to register for the May 10, 2010 National and Local Elections need not register anew but they will be allowed to file for a transfer of registration if they need to.
