Barely a week before the most anticipated event of the year, the May 2010 National and Local election, the fear for failure of election is looming. This time, the cause are the the faulty Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines.

The delivered PCOS machines in some areas in Cebu and Metro Manila were already tested to ensure their functionality before May 10 but unfortunately, all the machines malfunctioned delivering incorrect tally of votes for the local candidates when compared to the manual count administered by BEI. However, the tally of votes for national candidates were correct and consistent with the manual count.

Smartmatic, creator and supplier of the million-worth machines admitted their faults for the PCOS malfunction. COMELEC is giving them time within the week to correct the problem. Meanwhile, all memory cards for the PCOS were recalled by Smartmatic. Presidential lawyer Atty. Macalintal suggested that the election be suspended for fifteen (15) days to give time for COMELEC to fix the PCOS machines and to ready its options for the possibility of manual count if in case the PCOS machines will not get fixed.

The possibility of delayed or failure of election are not acceptable to the Filipino people, that’s for sure.
