Getting past the wrath of Ondoy in our City, we are now forward looking. It is not easy to move on as it was indeed a life-changing tragedy but life must go on.
(In front of our house. Taken a little after the flood water subsided.)
We are very thankful there were so many kind souls who helped the city of Marikina after the disaster. One of the most notable is the Tzu Chi Foundation from Taiwan, a Buddhist group led by Master Ching Yen whose volunteers literally cleaned the mess brought by the typhoon and provided financial and medical assistance to our fellow Marikenyos. The efforts of Tzu chi Foundation in turning the city around left a mark in our hearts which will never ever be forgotten.
Although I was not directly helped by Tzu Chi, their efforts in cleaning up our community and providing temporary employment to the victims of Ondoy in Marikina are more than enough reasons for me to really hail their organization. I would not forget the time one of their officers in the Philippines, Mr. Alfredo Lee, gave a speech during the thanksgiving ceremony for Tzu Chi. He said their master always tell them:Â “to help, it cannot wait.”
What he said made me decided it really is time to pay back to others in need what others have done for me and my family when we were in distress. Friends and strangers who offered unselfishly anything they thought would be of help to us, those who provided food which fed me and my family, those who donated clothing since ours were destroyed by the flood, and those who gave up their own mattress and blankets so we can sleep comfortably after sleepless and tiresome days.
This christmas, I am still thinking of what help I can provide in my own capacity. What about you?
