Protecting Your Computer

My laptop bogged down on me last Saturday for some reasons that I didn’t know at first. What I noticed was that, I cannot open some sites that I normally would be able to open at any time.

I tried re-starting my system and even went to the process of using another browser aside from the two (2) browsers that I am currently using but the problem still persist.

I called my network provider and asked them for technical support but the person I talked to only asked me to re-start my system again. Still, nothing happened. He then told me to capture the screen and send the error to their technical people via email. I was inclined to do it but it would take sometime so I just called a few friends and told them what’s going on in my laptop.

One of my friends told me that my laptop probably has a virus. He told me to use an anti-virus that he prefers. I told him I already got an anti-virus in place but then apparently, it did not screen the virus that hit my system.

That made me ask, what do we really need to do to keep our PC protected? There are a lot of spy wares and viruses that are threatening our system especially when we use the internet.

My friend told me that I need to use a firewall and an anti-virus at the same time. What is a firewall anyway? According to my research, there are two (2) types of firewall, one is hardware based and the other is software based. The hardware based firewall are meant to block intrusion from the internet while the software based firewall is meant to limit or block (depending on your settings) outbound traffic, meaning from your computer out to the internet.

For the anti-virus, there are a lot of anti-virus software that you can buy or download for free. You may want to ask around and read a lot of reviews before choosing the anti-virus that would suit your needs. But I tell you, there is no perfect anti-virus software. There are always new viruses being created everyday. What we need to do to at least be able to keep our anti-virus working is to keep them updated.

But on top of all of these, we still need to use precaution whenever we are browsing different websites and downloading stuff. We have to be very careful and as much as possible, download only from reputable sites.

Lastly, we need to schedule a weekly or monthly backup of our files just in case everything else fails.
