While I am an avid user of Facebook to connect with friends and promote my blogsites, I am not fanatics of its applications. Many of my friends are, they are into Mafia Wars, Cafe World and the most popular, Farmville.
Bad news to loyal patrons of Farmville though, Time Magazine just named it one of the fifty (50) worst inventions of all times. While Zynga, creator of Farmville boast that the “game” already has reached 100 million users, Dan Fletcher wrote that Farmville is hardly even a game. He explained it’s more a series of mindless chores on a digital farm, requiring the endless clicking of a mouse to plant and harvest crops.
His point, Americans (and other nationalities like Pinoys) log in to create and manage their online homesteads resulting to productivity losses. And may I add, hours of Internet time plus waste of broadband and energy cost goes into virtual farming without any productive or useful return to the user.
Along with Farmville in the list of Time’s Worst Inventions is the application Foursquare which supposedly promotes narcissism. While Time.com’s Kristi Oloffson acknowledges its potential for being useful with coupons, such as Starbucks’s recent promotion for its mayors, she dismisses it as “another layer onto a generation living virtually.”
What do you think? Do you agree that Time is right on its verdict about choosing Farmville and Foursquare as Worst Inventions?
